Conserve Our Water
We cannot live without our water supply. Amazingly, less than 1% of the water on Earth is fresh water. It is not always available when and where we need it. To move this valuable resource, it takes energy and money. This is why it is important to use only the water that you need.

Do not give your grass more water than it needs. An inch every week is plenty for most lawns, and that includes rainwater.

Water early in the morning, when temperatures and wind speeds are lower and less water will be lost through evaporation.

Raise your mower blade. Closely cropped, grass dries out very quickly.

Make sure your sprinklers are not watering streets or driveways. Concrete doesn't grow!

Mulch your trees and flowerbeds to retain moisture and control weeks that compete with plants for moisture.
| Keep our Rivers and Lakes Clean |
The City of Wichita is proud to implement a innovative program that improves the quality of our storm water run-off through participation of local businesses. It is called "Best Management Practices" and has been a success thanks to the many agri-businesses and companies that have participated. You can do your part in keeping our rivers and lakes clean by making sure hazardous material stay out of our drainage system. Be sure to properly dispose of items such as:

Herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers

Soap, detergent, degreaser solvent or surfactant-based cleaners from businesses

Waste from animal pens, kennels or livestock
-
Motor oil or any other petroleum product
Items such as paint, cleaning fluids, gasoline and cleaning solvents can be disposed of properly to protect our environment. Be sure to dispose your hazardous waste at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
