“Prevent Home Fires”

The 2008 Fire Prevention Week will be observed October 5-11 in the City of Wichita. To promote the campaign the Wichita Fire Department (W.F.D.)has scheduled a number of activities of interest to the public.

OLD COWTOWN FIRE SAFETY EDUCATION FAIR:
9:00 a.m., Friday, October 3rd   at Old Cowtown, 1865 Museum Blvd.
The W.F.D. in conjunction with Old Cowtown will be hosting a safety event for all area grade schools. The event will allow students to learn about fire safety, watch a Heavy Rescue demonstration, fire safety puppet show and tour the sites of Old Cowtown.

FILE OF LIFE SAFETY CARAVAN:
10:30 a.m., Monday, October 6th at LaFamilia Senior Service Center, 841 West 21st Street
11:45 a.m., Monday October 6th at North East Senior Center, 2121 East 21st Street
9:15 a.m., Friday October 10th at Lynnwood Recreation Center
10:00 a.m., Friday October 10th at Colvin Senior Center
The W.F.D. will be kick off its File of Life program, which is designed to save lives by giving first responders quick access to important medical information about an injured or sick patient. Firefighters will assist senior citizens and others with filling out the information packets.

FIFTH GRADE FIRE PREVENTION ADVENTURE AT THE ZOO:
10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 7th at the Sedgwick County Zoo
The W.F.D. will join forces with other area fire departments and public services to host a safety event at the zoo. All 5th grade students throughout Wichita, Sedgwick County and surrounding areas will be invited to attend the event. It will give students the opportunity to interact with firefighters, safety personnel and participate in fire prevention and safety activities.

FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURE REVIEW:
9:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 8th at Wichita’s City Hall (City Council Chambers), 455 N. Main
The W.F.D. will present a program on administrative regulations regarding fire evacuation and bomb threats at City Hall to City Hall employees.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND FITNESS AWARENESS DAY:
10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 9th at the North Branch YMCA, 3330 N. Woodlawn.
The W.F.D. will present a fire prevention program for all home schools located in the City and County. Students will practice life safety skills such as how to leave a smoked filled room and learn about the dangers of playing with matches and lighters. Health and Wellness activities will also be presented by YMCA Staff.

PARTNERS IN PREVENTION SENIOR CITIZEN PROGRAM:
1:30 p.m., Friday, October 10th at Country Acres Senior Center, 343 Country Acres
The W.F.D. will present a program especially for seniors and have an antique fire engine on display. Seniors will also have an opportunity to obtain a flu vaccination given by the Sedgwick County Health Department.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK PARADE:
2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 11th starting at Pawnee and Broadway and proceeding north to the Firefighter Museum, 1300 South Broadway.
The parade will feature more than 50 entries of current and antique fire equipment plus marching bands and Honor Guard. The museum will also offer free admission on the day of the parade.

KANSAS STATE FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS MEMORIAL:
1:30 p.m., Sunday, October 12th at the Kansas Firefighters Museum, 1300 South Broadway
A memorial service will be held at the Kansas Firefighters Museum to honor all Kansas firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Each department’s Fire Chief will read the names of each fallen firefighter.
