Schematic designs for Wichita Mid-Continent Airport’s new terminal were made public this week and are attached to this press release. If the Wichita Airport Authority (WAA) approves the designs, construction of the two-story terminal will begin in late 2008 and be completed in 2011.

After a design scope and financial analysis, the project is estimated to cost $150 million and the state-of-the-art terminal is designed to accommodate at least two million passengers annually.

The project is designed to control costs related to construction and airline rental rate as well as provide more operational efficiencies for airlines and passengers. The 230,000-square-foot terminal will be west of the existing terminal. It will feature modern architectural design and aviation-themed exhibits, expressing Wichita’s globally recognized position in the aviation industry. Major elements of the project include:

  • New terminal roadway and covered curb with separate lanes for private and commercial vehicles.

  • A terminal building with enlarged ticketing and baggage claim on the main entry level.

  • An upper level concourse with departure lounges, concessions and expanded passenger security screening.

  • 10 boarding gates, each equipped with a passenger boarding bridge.

  • Passenger baggage handling systems with inline explosives detection security screening.

  • Enhanced pre-security and post-security concessions and passenger services.

  • Rental car service counters, plus close-in parking and car return.

  • Short-term and long-term public parking plus a new expanded shuttle parking lot.

  • Parking that totals nearly 3,000 spaces.

  • New communications, life safety and security systems.

  • New aircraft apron to accommodate the relocated terminal and gates.

The existing terminal, which will be removed after the new terminal is completed, was built in 1954. In 2004, WAA decided to replace it and program management and architectural design teams were selected. Joining lead firm HNTB are Gossen Livingston Associates, Professional Engineering Consultants and Dudley Williams Associates. Themed exhibits and public art are coordinated by Greteman Group; landscape design, by Landworks Studio.
