Today, June 4, the City of Wichita Public Works Department will return with their equipment after working long shifts to assist in the Greensburg clean up. On May 18, the department sent 62 people and heavy equipment to Greensburg to assist in clean up efforts from the May 4 tornado.
The group will arrive at the Central Maintenance Facility at 1801 S. McLean beginning at 11:30 AM and continue arriving until everyone is home. They have a caravan returning on U.S. 54 that should be spaced in 10-person groups.
“I am proud of these employees for working long, hard hours to help our friends of Greensburg,” said Public Works Director Chris Carrier.
The Public Works crew was one of the largest contingencies of people outside of the citizens of Greensburg on site to help. This was the second group from Public Works to go to Greensburg. Each group stayed for 7 days and worked 12-hour shifts.
The City of Wichita still has people on site from the departments of Environmental Services, Water Utilities and Central Inspection to assist in their professional fields. Also the Wichita Police and Fire Departments were on hand when the disaster first hit, handling most of the public safety aspects in the 48 hours following the tornado’s destruction. The City of Wichita remains committed to assisting Greensburg in their rebuilding efforts.
