With the lack of moisture and extremely dry conditions, cigarettes are increasingly causing fires.

The Wichita Fire Department is urging motorists and smokers to not discard cigarettes through automobile windows. Within the past 24 hours, three fires have started after cigarettes were tossed out of vehicles.

The department also wants to remind citizens that tossing cigarettes out of your automobile window is considered littering in the City of Wichita. Offenders are subject to a mandatory fine of $100 to $1,000.

Given the current extremely dry conditions, WFD officials will increase monitoring efforts to catch those violating the ordinance.
