Citizens of Wichita may have noticed the City’s COX Cable Channel 7 has some noticeable improvements. The City of Wichita recently upgraded the system into a digital format. This new format gives the City the capability to play more programs and greatly increases the quality of the channel. The top priority of the channel remains to keep citizens informed about their local government. With these improvements, the channel is more flexible and updated more frequently so that it is a better communications tool.

"The City Council meetings continue to be a key component of the channel," said Kirk Swilley, CIO and Director of the IT/IS Department. "Now that this new system is in place, it is also web-based to provide streaming video of the Council meetings through the City’s website, www.wichita.gov, which is a great asset for people that may not be near a TV, but have a computer in their office," said Swilley. "The Council meetings can be played as they occur, but are also available later with indexing on the website to view a specific agenda item or discussion or even the entire meeting."

People can tune in to find more up-to-date information because of the new capabilities of Channel 7. For example, the rotating billboards have information on how to help Hurricane Katrina victims, City Auction and the recently released all-encompassing things to do guide called "Live. Learn. Play!" These billboards continue to play the trademark music unique to the Channel during those rotating billboards. There have also been commercials added to Channel 7 that promote city services such as Ice Sports, Transit and Golf. The City’s Channel 7 is based out of City Hall in the City Council Board Room.
