These types of assumptions and speculations have and will continue to complicate an already complex investigation. In addition, inaccurate information does a disservice to the victims, their families and the community.

The BTK investigation has and will continue to be guided by the United States Constitution, which means that we will adhere to due process. This case will not be tried in the media, but rather in a court of law.

The following are facts involving this systematic investigation:

• Approximately 12:15 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2005, the serial killer known as BTK was arrested in Park City, Kansas.

• Dennis L. Rader has been arrested in connection with 10 homicides that span over 31 years in the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County.

• Dennis L. Rader is currently in the Sedgwick County Adult Detention facility, being held on a $10 million bond; $1 million on each homicide.

• The investigation is ongoing and details pertaining to this investigation will not be discussed. The Wichita Police Department has a strict media policy that prohibits any information being disseminated that will compromise or jeopardize an investigation.

• The Task Force has a responsibility and obligation to the victims and their families to maintain the professionalism and integrity of this ongoing investigation.

• Details about the investigation will be presented during the appropriate trial setting and at that time that the public and media will learn about the case.

• Chief Williams plans to approach the District Attorney’s Office to discuss legal recourse regarding individuals and media organizations that disseminate inaccurate information.

The Office of the Chief of Police will be the only voice responsible for releasing official information regarding this investigation. Once the case has been charged by the District Attorney’s Office, the Wichita Police Department will not respond to any questions.
