Winter Ice Storm: Be Prepared and Stay Safe

Winter weather has brought ice, snow and high winds to the city. To help you deal with these adverse conditions, the City of Wichita Fire Department offers the following advice:

  • Regardless of the weather, never use candles or other open flames devices as a heating source indoors. Just within the last 24 hours, the Fire Department has responded to a fire where candles were used as a heating alternative.

  • Avoid using your stove’s oven and burners as a heating device. Carbon monoxide may be produced and even in small quantities- can cause illness or death.

  • Use portable space heating equipment very carefully. Keep heaters at least three feet away from any combustible material. Do not drape wet gloves, socks or other clothing over a space heater to dry.

  • Make sure you have essential supplies ready for use at home. These include: flashlights, radio, a first aid kit, food and water.

  • Do not attempt to move or drive over "downed" power lines.

  • If a fire starts, call 911.

For additional safety information contact Fire Prevention at 268-4441.
