It is time for a change. This weekend, when you change your clocks, replace the batteries in your smoke alarms.
Statistics show that most fire fatalities occur between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. when people are asleep. Contrary to popular belief, the smell of smoke may not wake a sleeping person. Instead, the poisonous gases and smoke produced by the fire will numb the senses and put you in a deeper sleep. The only thing standing between the deadly fumes of a fire and a safe escape is the shrill, piercing noise of a smoke alarm.
Your smoke alarm has the power to save your life. Or does it? If you haven't checked your smoke alarm lately, how do you know it works? This is a risk you can't afford to take. A working smoke alarm gives you an early warning there is a fire and allows you time to escape. It is one of the best and cheapest safety features you can have to protect you and your loved ones. But smoke alarms can't do their job if you haven't done yours. Therefore, when you set your clocks back, replace the batteries in your smoke alarms. In addition, give it a good dusting. Accumulated dust and dirt may cause it to malfunction.
Remember, Fire Prevention is everyone's business. Please make it yours.
