This week, the Wichita City Council addressed the issue of the financial condition of Ice Sports Wichita. While suggestions regarding the future of the ice arena were discussed, at the end of Tuesday’s Council meeting, no action had been voted upon regarding the closing of the facility.
One statement that was made during the deliberation was the temporary closing of the facility. It should be understood that this was a suggestion and that no decision has been made to close Ice Sports, even temporarily. The City has received several inquiries regarding this suggestion and it is our hope to correct any misperceptions about the action that took place this past Tuesday.
The current perception in the public, garnered from emails and phone calls received by the City Council Members and City staff, is that the facility is going to be closed until further notice. The City of Wichita wants to make it clear that there is no plan, and there has never been a plan, that the facility will close.
"We are not closing the facility," said Mayor Mayans, "we are just looking for more accountability."
The motion, approved 7-0, was to direct City staff to present a list of outstanding bills to the City Council at their monthly workshop on Sept. 28. This list is to be presented on the Consent Agenda, which is voted upon prior to the start of the workshop. The list is to include all of the vendors the ice arena has outstanding balances with, including the exact amount of bills owed to the vendors. The outstanding bills would not include the management fees.
