On August 4, 2004, the Director of the National Park Service announced the designation of four historic districts in Wichita to the National Register of Historic Places. The districts are the Bitting Historic District, Park Place/Fairview Historic District, Topeka/Emporia Historic District and the East Douglas Historic District. Earlier this year, the Kansas State Historical Society listed these districts in the Kansas Register of Historic Places.

Other State/National Register districts in Wichita are the Topeka/10th Street Historic District and the Warehouse and Jobbers (Old Town) Historic District. In addition to these six districts, there are 50 Wichita properties individually listed in the State/National Registers of Historic Places.

Listing in the National Register of Historic Places is an honorary designation and in order to qualify, the property must meet certain criteria. There are several financial incentive programs specifically for state/national register listed properties.

For more information about the financial incentive programs for listed properties or to inquire about getting a property listed in the state/national registers, contact the City of Wichita Historic Preservation Office at 316-258-4421.
