The storms which blew through Wichita last night did not cause widespread major damage.
Because downed trees and broken limbs on public property are isolated and not extensive, the City of Wichita will not be launching a City-wide clean-up of storm debris.
City crews are responsible for cleanup and tree debris removal when strong winds or thunderstorms result in downed trees or tree limbs on public property from public trees. All public street trees located within the street right-of-way are the responsibility of the City. This includes trees located between the sidewalk and the curb or within close proximity to the street and trees growing in through alleys. Right-of-way varies from street to street so inspection is often needed to determine ownership and therefore responsibility for the tree and tree debris.
The City is not responsible for the cleanup and disposal of storm damage on private property in areas outside the street right-of-way or areas outside the city limits of Wichita. If debris falls from private trees onto the street right-of-way then city staff may take action to clear the right of way and may place the material back onto private property. Pilling or stacking debris from private trees onto the right-of-way does not place the responsibility of clean-up and removal onto the City. A citizen may be subject to ticketing or other legal action as a result of unlawfully placing material within the right-of-way.
