The City of Wichita is pleased to retire the last of the RTS buses that were part of the Wichita Transit team. The twenty-five RTS and fifteen Flxible buses were purchased in 1980 and 1983, respectively, and have been in service well beyond their expected life of 12 years. These buses served Wichita well, logging over 32 million miles and carrying over 43 million passengers since they have been on the road. The older buses have been retired and will be stored until they hit the auction block in September.
The City unveiled the new buses that will serve Wichita citizens in March 2002. The new slogan "Your Ride Is Here" announces to Wichita that they have comfortable and convenient transportation. Highlights of the new buses include use of cleaner burning fuel, better comfort and safety for passengers, and 100% accessible to the disabled. Federal funds financed 80% of the new bus cost while the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) provided the remaining 20%.
The City of Wichita provides transportation for over 2 million passengers and 210,000 disabled riders each year. Wichita’s fleet consists of 51 buses and 26 ADA vans. Over 75% of the City’s bus fleet was replaced since December 2001.
