Abundance of Rain Causes Groundwater Levels to Rise

Date: July 14, 1999
Contact: Chris Carrier, Storm Water Utility Engineer
E-mail: CCarrier@wichita.gov

Higher than normal rainfall in the first half of 1999 has raised water levels in area lakes, rivers and streams, and has also impacted groundwater levels. Readings taken by City of Wichita at 52nd Street South and Seneca indicate that the groundwater table in that area has risen nearly two feet since last summer.

The groundwater table is influenced by long-term rainfall patterns and river elevations. Because of Wichita’s location in the Arkansas River basin, the groundwater table is higher in west Wichita, and highest in southwest Wichita.

The City has noted sump pumps discharging water from basements in the areas around I-235 and Meridian, and 55th Street South and Seneca. As rainfall continues, the City expects that more citizens will be impacted by high groundwater, with the need to pump water from basements.

The City is attempting to identify areas impacted by high groundwater levels. Any citizens who experience groundwater flooding into their basements should call the Storm Water Utility office at 268-4498.
