TSA Announces $6.9 Million Award for New Checked Baggage Screening System at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport

WICHITA, Kan. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced an award of nearly $6.9 million to Wichita Mid-Continent Airport (ICT) for the construction of an inline baggage screening system at the new airport terminal designed to enhance TSA’s efforts to strengthen security at airports.

“The addition of a state-of-the-art inline baggage system in the new terminal will significantly improve the speed and efficiency of our screening operations at Wichita,” said ICT Federal Security Director Keith Osborn. “The new system will also eliminate the need for passengers to carry their bags to the screening area.”

The approximately $6.9 million award, derived from fiscal 2009 funds, will be an upgrade to the stand alone system that is currently used at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, and is due to be completed in mid-2013. Inline screening systems allow TSA to screen baggage for explosives more efficiently, while reducing the number of re-scans and physical bag searches. When completed, ICT will feature 100 percent inline screening.

“We are thrilled that TSA has selected Wichita Mid-Continent’s new terminal project to receive the sophisticated new baggage screening technology,” said Victor White, Director of Airports for the Wichita Airport Authority. “Passengers will be able to check in their bags at the airline ticket counter and then proceed to the gate. Expediting the bag check-in process is an important customer service convenience feature we are implementing with the new terminal project.”

The new terminal project is a $160 million effort to replace the current facility that is nearly 60 years old.
