The benefits are that the new high-tech water meters – or Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) – reduce the need to access customers’ yards and improve meter reading accuracy. The new meters, which are being phased in, also reduce Water Utilities’ operational costs, particularly related to staffing and vehicles. The new meters use low-power radio frequency to transmit customers’ monthly water-usage information to mobile collection devices operated by meter readers from City vehicles. Since 1996, Water Utilities crews have been replacing existing meters with AMR meters.

The possible criminal activity stems from increased instances of apparent tampering. Tampering with a water meter is a criminal offense, which could result in up to a $100 fine or termination of service.

“People have cut the AMR cable that connects the meter lid to the water meter, possibly thinking that it will disable the meter,” said Kristi Vestweber, Customer Service Manager. “Cutting the cable or damaging the meter does not prevent it from being read.”

About 55,000 of Wichita’s 140,000 water customers will have AMR meters by the end of 2008. The City plans to install 15,000 new meters each year, primarily through meter replacements and new home construction. There is no additional charge for AMR meters.
