Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer has proclaimed Saturday, September 19th to be Wichita Play Day to celebrate the importance of family fun and taking time to play.
The Wichita Play Day, hosted by the Wichita Play Commission, will be held at O.J. Watson Park at 3022 S. McLean Boulevard and will run from 1-4 p.m. The afternoon of old-fashioned fun is free to all ages and includes activities such as sack races, inflatables, parachute games, sand volleyball, baseball throw, sidewalk chalk art, train rides, face painting along with canoe and kayak rides, just to name a few.
Studies show most children today are not getting the same chance to play freely and reap the benefits that play has to offer. The City of Wichita is trying to change that by making play a priority in our community. Recently, Wichita was one of 93 communities – and the first in Kansas – named a national Playful City USA community.
The Wichita Play Commission wants the Wichita Play Day to be the start of something wonderful and exciting for the citizens of Wichita. Darell Hammond, CEO and co-founder of KaBOOM!, the organization that established the Playful City USA initiative says, “Wichita took a stand and determined that the future of their community—their children—deserve a commitment to the cause of play. This is an investment in the future, not an expenditure and cities and towns across the country can replicate initiatives from these Playful City USA communities so that they too can bring play back into the lives of their children.”
