Left turns at Douglas and Oliver will be easier to make by the end of October 2008.
Starting May 12, however, left turns will not be permitted when a $1.3 million project to add left turn lanes in all four directions is slated to begin. The project will include wider and straighter through lanes, new traffic signals and brick crosswalks.
A public information meeting for this project will be held at 7 pm on May 5th at Grace Presbyterian Church, 5002 east Douglas.
“We worked really hard with the College Hill neighborhood and the businesses at the intersection to develop plans that would be acceptable to them,” said Chris Carrier, Public Works Director for the City of Wichita.“ I know the folks who drive through the intersection will be happy with it.”
The project will begin with storm sewer and water line construction on Douglas from Oliver to Glendale, and on the west half of Oliver. Starting in early June, the intersection of Douglas and Oliver will be reconstructed in quadrants.
One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on Douglas and Oliver at all times during construction, but no left turns will be allowed at the intersection. Access to businesses will be maintained.
The project is expected to be completed by October 31, 2008.
