Wichita Mid-Continent Airport passenger records continue to soar, with March attracting a record 142,259 passengers, marking the 18th consecutive increase of passenger traffic. Mid-Continent’s first quarter passenger traffic was up 12.67% over 2007, when it enjoyed a record 1.6 million passengers.
The airport has been improving its air service. Several new airlines were introduced to the market. The latest addition is Northwest Airlink, which will begin nonstop service to Detroit, May 2nd. In May 2007, Allegiant Air began nonstop service to Orlando-Sanford. In July, nonstop service to LAX followed with Express Jet. And in September, United Express entered the market. In October, Frontier Airlines began service, lowering fares to Denver and the west.
Passenger traffic growth actually began in October 2006, with the presence of discount airline AirTran Airways keeping pressure on eastern fares and Allegiant Air lowering fares to Las Vegas.
“With the mix of nonstop destinations and affordable fares, passengers are responding in record numbers,” Valerie Wise, Air service and Business Development Manager, said. “We will continue to work hard to maintain Wichita’s affordable air service.”
Mid-Continent Airport serves 13 nonstop destinations on 13 airlines: AirTran Airways, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, American Eagle, Chautauqua Airlines, Atlantic Southeast Airlines, Continental Express, Frontier Express, Northwest Airlink, TransStates Airlines, United Airlines, United Express, and US Airways Express.
