About 350 Clark Elementary students attended the launching of an adopt-a-school program on Friday at Clark Elementary, 650 S. Apache. City Councilwoman Sue Schlapp is leading the pilot program, a public-private partnership that provides Clark students with mentoring, school supplies and other support.
“It’s going to be a revolving and a growing program,” said Schlapp, who encouraged students to repeatedly chant: “I am important.” “We’re going to take the pilot program back to City Hall and hopefully apply it to schools in other districts.”
Attendees included Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer, Clark principal Judy Wright, District II Advisory Board (DAB) and staffers from the Wichita Fire Department, the Wichita Police Department and the City Manager’s Office. District II residents, employers and others have pledged support and donated supplies including Hutton Law Firm, Warren Theatres, Ritchie Development and Wichita Children’s Theatre & Dance Center.
To get involved, contact District Neighborhood Assistant Antione Sherfield at 268-4197 or asherfield@wichita.gov. The program seeks guest speakers, mentors, donors and support for the Clark Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).
