At the 2006 Annual Conference of the League of Kansas Municipalities (LKM) in Topeka, Kansas, Mayor Carlos Mayans was selected to serve as Vice President of the statewide association of cities. Having been selected by his peers, Mayans began his term as Vice President October 10, 2006.
Mayans is currently the Mayor of Wichita. Born in Havana, Cuba, he later came to the United States after the communist takeover of Cuba. In 1977, Mayans started his own insurance agency and risk management business. He sold it in 2002 in order to devote more time to working on community issues.
A successful independent businessman and experienced public servant, Mayans campaigned for the job of Mayor and was overwhelmingly elected by Wichita voters in April 2003. He is the city’s first Hispanic mayor to be elected by a popular vote.
Mayans has served the people of Wichita for more than a decade. He was elected to represent Wichita’s 100th District in the Kansas House of Representatives in 1992. The voters reelected him by wide margins in 1994, 1996, 1998, and 2000.
Established by municipal officials in 1910, the LKM is a voluntary, nonpartisan federation of over 570 Kansas cities. It operates as a governmental entity and is defined by state law as an instrumentality of its member cities. The mission of LKM is to unify, strengthen, and advocate for the interests of Kansas municipalities to advance the general welfare and promote the quality of life of the people who live within our cities.
