We Are Counting on You: Census 2000

Date: March 8, 2000

Why is the Census Important?

City of Wichita logo. The Census is in Your Hands:
This Census 2000 will help decision-makers realize where they need to invest your tax dollars. But they won’t be able to tell what your community needs if you don’t take the time to fill out your census form and mail it back.

The Census 2000 Questionnaire that most people will receive in March will ask about only seven subjects: name, sex, age, relationship, Hispanic origin, race, and housing tenure (whether home is owned or rented) - and takes about 10 minutes to fill out.

By returning your completed census form, your tax dollars will be hard at work!

The City of Wichita and the State of Kansas use census information for planning and allocating funds for new school construction, public buildings such as libraries, highway safety and public transportation systems, new roads and bridges, location of police and fire departments and many other projects.

Community Organizations use census information for developing social service programs, community action projects, senior lunch programs and child care centers.

Businesses use the numbers to decide where to locate factories, shopping centers, movie theaters, banks and offices—leading to the creation of jobs in your area.

The federal government uses census numbers to allocate more than $200 billion in federal funds annually for community programs and services including education programs, housing and community development, health-care services for the elderly, job training and many other programs.

The U.S. Congress uses the census to determine how many seats the State of Kansas will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.
