How to Read Your Water Meter

This diagram shows you how to read your water meter.Learning to read your water meter can save you money. Simply reading your meter before starting and after completing various household chores such as showering, washing clothes or watering the lawn can help you monitor consumption.

Most of Wichita's water meters show water consumption in cubic feet and have a reading dial that looks and works like a vehicle mileage odometer. One revolution of the red meter dial is 7.5 gallons. For example, the meter on this page illustrates 7.5 gallons of water consumption.

To find out how much you've used in any given period, just subtract the number on your last bill from the current meter reading.
