The mission of the Maintenance Division is to provide a safe, clean and attractive environment for the citizens of Wichita, through effective maintenance and management of the City's street systems, traffic management systems, public rights-of-way, storm water drainage systems, flood control systems, and solid waste programs.

The Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining curb-to-curb infrastructure, including 1,792 miles of streets, 109 miles of alleys, 303 vehicular bridges, 30 pedestrian bridges, 395 signalized intersections, 150 pedestrian/school signals, 1,350 parking meters, and 60,000 traffic signs.

The Division is also responsible for street cleaning, snow and ice removal and landfill resource management.

Our Sections

The Division is divided into four distinct sections each with their own area of responsibility, but working together to accomplish our goals. They include:

• Street Maintenance
  Repairs pavement, does temporary patching, maintains dirt streets and alleys, does graffiti removal and clean ditches.

• Pavement Management
  Utilizes a computerized Pavement Management System (PMS) to provide an inventory of streets and their condition. The section also oversees the division's contracted street maintenance program.

• Street Services
  Sweeps the streets, performs litter pickup, paints over graffiti, oversees landfill operations (including environmental compliance), and is involved in alley and neighborhood cleanups.

• Traffic Maintenance
  Maintains and installs the City's traffic signals, traffic signs, pavement markings and parking meters.

In addition, the Maintenance Division coordinates the City’s emergency maintenance needs in the event of disasters that impact the public right-of-ways.

Activities include snow and ice removal during winter storms; they also respond in the event of floods and damage caused by high winds.

All of the division's sections are involved during any emergency situation, and routine maintenance is effectively "put on hold".
