MD 500E
The MD 500E is a derivative of the OH6A U.S. military helicopter, whose service to the country, especially in Viet Nam, is legendary. A current military version, the AH-6J/MH-6J/MELB "Little Bird," has become equally renowned for service to the country with U.S. special forces teams in conflicts throughout various parts of the world including Grenada, Panama, Kuwait, Somalia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Dozens of 500E's are currently in service with numerous American law enforcement agencies nationwide.
Hughes Helicopters, the original manufacturer of the 300C piston engine helicopters previously operated by the Wichita Police Department Air Section, also originally manufactured the 500E. The 500E is really the 300C's "big brother." Historically, it could, perhaps, be said that both helicopters share the same lineage. Despite some basic, yet very important commonalities (pilot's seating position, traditional and non-boosted flight controls, etc.), the 500E offers exponentially more capability in all performance categories. The 500E was a very logical transition and progression for the Air Section.
The 500E is one of the world's fastest, quietest, and most agile light helicopters. It delivers the highest speed, payload (passenger and equipment weight carrying capability), and productivity in its class. The 500E is the fastest 5-place (passenger) light turbine available. It has a maximum cruise speed of 155 MPH, and a maximum "all out" speed of 175 MPH. The 500E has a maximum useful internal load of 1,519 pounds.
The 500E is a truly time tested and proven helicopter, ideally suited for the rigorous demands of police patrol work, that will well serve both the present and future needs for the Wichita Police Department for many years to come.
