Wichita Police Department's
Commitment to Safe Schools

The commitment between the Wichita Police Department and Wichita Public Schools stretches back over twenty-two years.  In 1978 the Wichita Police Department began providing police officers for classroom presentations and special school programs with School Liaison program.  Beginning in 1997 six officers were each assigned full time to the six largest public high schools.  Known as School Resource Officers or SRO's, these officers work to increase student's awareness  of their rights as citizens and their responsibilities under the law.  The School Resource Officer Program has now expanded to an additional twelve officers assigned to Wichita middle schools.  The expanded School Resource Officer program and the School Liaison program are fostering the department's community policing initiative, building positive relationships between young people and Law Enforcement.

A message from USD 259 Superintendent Winston Brooks

You don't reduce the number of gun incidents from 47 to 4 within a seven year period without support and cooperation by the local police department. You don't reduce gang activity incidents in the schools by over half in just four years without the involvement of the local police department. You don't reduce the number of drug incidents from 145 to 99 in just a two year period without cooperation between the school districts security department and the police department.  These are just three examples of data that illustrate the work and accomplishments of the Wichita Public Schools Safety and Services Department and the Wichita Police Department.  Leadership from both organizations, progressive thinking from many, and a willingness to take a risk on ideas foreign to many are the keys to our success. Collaboration, SRO's, and communication are the initiatives that we know work.
