Mission Statement

 

"The mission statement of the Technical Service Bureau is to provide crime scene investigation to the Wichita Police Department through recognition, collection, and preservation of physical evidence. Provide to this department and outside agencies the examination and analysis of physical evidence, expert testimony in a court of law to aid in the prosecution of the guilty and the protection of the innocent."

The Technical Service Bureau is divided into two sections;
Property & Evidence and the Crime Laboratory

Property & Evidence Section

The Property and Evidence Section is responsible for maintaining care and custody of all evidence, personal and found property submitted by the police department. Inventory is kept by logging all properties in the computer system. Property and Evidence auctions all unclaimed properties via the internet. Please visit our website at PropertyRoom.com. Quarterly the Property & Evidence Section auctions unclaimed vehicles.

The Crime Laboratory is divided into the following units:

Latent Print Examiner

The Crime Lab has two Latent Print Examiners. Their responsibilities include processing evidence for latent prints as well as the examination of latent prints to determine their value for comparison. They compare latent prints to the known prints of named individuals for identification or exclusion. They enter unidentified latent prints into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and/or the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS). Approximately 3,000 latent prints per year are handled by the Latent Print Section.

The Crime Lab has one Photographer and one Photo Technician. They are responsible for developing all of the rolls of film taken by the police department and the printing of photographs for the courts. They also develop and print photographs for other agencies. The Photography Section develops over 6,000 rolls of film and prints over 30,000 photos per year.
