GET A GRIP ON GRAFFITI

Graffiti vandalism is a crime that affects the entire community. The existence of graffiti defaces property, taking away from the attractiveness of neighborhoods. Graffiti sends the indication of disorder and gives others the impression that residents do not care about their neighborhood. Graffiti not only attracts additional vandalism, but other crimes as well.

Gangs often use graffiti as a means to communicate, this may include identifying turf, listing gang names and issuing challenges or threats. Tagging involves the use of words, initials, letters or street names and is usually done with the claim of being "artful". Regardless of the reason the result is the same costing taxpayers thousands annually due to increased crime, diminished property values, and reduced quality of life.

You can help prevent and reduce graffiti in your neighborhood by performing the three R’s.

Recognize

Recognize and observe what occurs in your neighborhood. Be observant of graffiti vandalism and persons involved in other suspicious activity.

Report

Report graffiti and other vandalism to police. Call your nearest police substation to report graffiti or other vandalism in your neighborhood. If you are witnessing vandalism (or any crime) in progress, call 911 immediately.

Remove

Remove graffiti vandalism promptly from you neighborhood. Quick removal is recommended and required to prevent/reduce additional occurrences. If you need assistance removing or obliterating graffiti the City of Wichita may be able to provide assistance. City crews are available to assist and coordinated through the Office of Central Inspection. If a property owner signs a waiver for the city’s assistance there is typically no charge for the service. City ordinance does allow for provisions to remove the graffiti even if the property owner does not sign the waiver. In these cases the property owner may be billed for the service.

Reporte
