Join The Party!
Wichita residents are once again invited to join thousands of other communities across America in supporting a unique, coast-to coast crime prevention project on August 5th, 2008 to give neighborhood crime and drugs a "going away" party. From 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., residents city wide and across the nation, will be asked to turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside on their block.
For the last seventeen years, the Wichita Police Department has won national awards for its National Night Out program. In 2007 Wichita finished 10th in overall participation in the category of cities with 300,000+ population.
During National Night Out 2008 many neighborhoods will be hosting special activities such as yard parties, cookouts, etc. National Night Out gives people a chance to heighten crime prevention awareness, bring neighbors closer together, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighbors across the U.S.A. are organized and fighting back. Organize a special activity for your neighborhood. Officers from the Wichita Police Department will stop by and visit as many events as possible. The police helicopter will fly over and "spotlight" blocks hosting activities, Let’s get involved and join others across the country in letting criminals know they are not welcome in our community. Start planning your parties now with your neighborhood. For more information contact Officer Michelle Tennyson, Community Affairs 455 N. Main, Wichita KS, 67202, or call 268-4101.

Problems and Crime Trends
Incidents That Occurred Recently
On 06/24/08 at approximately 1:50 AM, we had a drive-by in the 1700 block of E. 23rd St. There were approximately 12 shots fired striking one car and a house where known gang members live. The victims, known gang members, did not report the incident. We found about it about 10:00 AM that morning. The suspect vehicle was a small dark colored compact car.
If you have any information about this crime, please contact Officer Kimble.
Later that week, we served a narcotics search warrant at the known gang location listed above. Illegal drugs were seized and arrests were made. We will be watching this location very closely to reduce any more illegal activity.
On 06/14/08, we had a male fire 20 shots at an occupied vehicle as it pulled into the gas station at 2601 N. Hillside. The suspect and victim left the location.
The victims were located and not injured. The male suspect was identified through video footage, and we are currently looking for him.
Problem Locations
Last month we mentioned the following problem between two families. We are still watching this to make sure there are no problems.
A household in the 2600 block of N. Piatt has been in a feud with a household in the 2600 block of N. Ash. From our understanding, this whole thing got started from a middle school aged girl at each household getting into a fight with each other. It has now escalated to everyone in the household being involved. This feud needs to stop! It has upset neighbors on both streets and in the area. It has affected the quality of life for some citizens in the area too. We will be doing strict enforcement at both locations to curtail this activity. We have gotten our City Housing Property Manager involved and he has sent notices to both households. We are hoping that this is over, so we do not have to take further action.
Calvary Towers at 2600 N. Grove has had a lot of illegal activity going on in and around the property. We will be doing enforcement in the area to reduce this activity.
We are having problems with adults and juveniles loitering in the late night hours in the 2400 block of N. Chautauqua. They are being loud and getting into fights, which keeps neighbors awake and worried about crime.
We are developing a plan of action to address this and reduce this problem.
We are watching the 2700 block of N. Spruce for drug and gang activity. Citizens have called us advising us of the activity, and we have seen it too.
We are currently working gang activity in the following locations:
-
2400 N. Chautauqua
-
2600 N. Piatt
-
2200 N. Volutsia
-
1700 E. 23rd St. N.
-
1900 E. 23rd St.
Traffic Issues
We have gotten a lot of complaints about loud music coming from vehicles. Music, including the base, cannot be audible from the vehicle more than 50 feet away.
If it is heard more than 50 feet from the vehicle you will receive a citation.
We will be doing traffic enforcement for speeding on North Minnesota
between 21st St. and 25th St. This is a 30 MPH residential street
We have noticed an increase with people parking their vehicles in the grass or on an unpaved surface. This is a violation and we have been out doing enforcement on this. Please avoid a ticket and do not park illegally.
