 Organizing A Neighborhood Watch

Block by block community mobilization is the most powerful weapon to fight crime. A neighborhood watch is the fastest, safest, and most effective way to rid your neighborhood of crime and prevent it from coming back. Why? Your neighbors and you coming together gives you power and power gives you results to take back your neighborhood block. For information on starting a neighborhood watch you can call the Community Affairs Section at 268-4101.

Crime Prevention Tip of the Month

The theft of mail is a common way for Identity Thieves to obtain all the information needed to assume your identity.  This also allows for thieves to take items such as checks, credit cards, bank statements or other negotiable items.  Please keep in mind these tips to help keep your identity safe.

  • Never send cash or coins in the mail. Use checks or money orders.
  • Promptly remove mail from the mailbox after delivery, especially if you're expecting checks, credit cards, or other negotiable items.  If you won't be home when the items are expected, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail.
  • Have your local post office hold your mail while you're on vacation, or absent from your home for a long period of time.
  • If you don't receive a check or other valuable mail you're expecting, contact the issuing agency immediately.
  • If you change your address, immediately notify your post office and anyone with whom you do business via the mail.
  • Do not place outgoing mail into residential street-side mailbox with the red flag.  This is convenient to alert the letter carrier there is outgoing mail; however it also lets the mail theif know there is mail to steal.
  • Always deposit your mail in a mail slot at your local post office, or hand it to your letter carrier.
  • If you observe a mail thief at work, call 911 immediately, and then your nearest Postal Inspector.

This Crime Prevention Tip of the Month is brought to you by the Wichita Police Department Crime Prevention Unit.

AUTO BREAK-IN's

During the past several months, we have seen an increase in autos being broken into along the Harry on both the north and south sides of the street.  This type of crime, is of opportunity.  The Wichita Police Department is reminding you to keep these few tips in mind while enjoying your summer activities.

  • Keep all packages out of sight.
  • Keep garage door openers off of the visors
  • Keep coins and bills out of sight.
  • Lock the doors to your vehicle.

MOTORIZED SCOOTERS AND SKATEBOARDS

As warm weather approaches, we will see a significant increase in juveniles riding motorized scooters and sakteboards on public streets.  This is a very dangerous activity since the majority of operators do not use safety equipment and the machines are not equipped with the correct safety lighting.

Motorized scooters and skateboards fall within the City and States definition of a motor vehicle.  As per State Statute 8-142, 8-235 and City Ordinance 11.04.170 which states: "MOTOR VEHICLE" MEANS EVERY VEHICLE WHICH IS SELF-PROPELLED."

These scooters, skateboards, go-carts, and go-peds fall within the definition of a motor vehicle and therefore require safety equipment, lights, blinkers, appropriate braking systems and reflectors, as well as being tagged and registered if operated on a public street or public right of way.  The driver MUST also have in their possession a valid driver's license.

Therefore, if a person age 14 or older is stopped for this violation, he or she can be issued a citation.  If a person is under the age of 14, the parent or guardian is responsible and could be issued a citation for allowing an unlicensed person operate a vehicle.

These vehicles can be operated on private property with the owner's permission.

If you have any questions regarding the issues surrounding operation of these vehicles, please feel free to contact Patrol East at 688-9300.
