Wichita skateboarders have been working on a skatepark for more than 10 years. The original proposed site was under the Kellogg overpass at the river; however, that site was changed to the current location between St. Francis and Emporia Streets, under the Kellogg overpass.
Approval for the land use was required from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) in order for the project to proceed. Project construction, which began in the Summer, 2005 and was scheduled to be completed by Fall 2005, was completed in October, 2005. A Grand Opening was held on Saturday, October 15, 2005. (See Skatepark Grand Opening for more information.)
A Skatepark Committee was formed and the skatepark design included input from a broad range of skating enthusiasts in our community. The design was developed by conducting design workshops to obtain input with local skaters. California Skatepark, the selected vendor, directed and supervised the entire project. Commerce Construction was the general contractor.
The skatepark features a 3 bowl area and a streetcourse. The total project budget was $480,000. The Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks (KDWP) awarded a Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) federal matching grant for $200,000, and the City matched the grant with Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and other funding.
