Public Art (H-L)

The following is a list of public works of art, statues, fountains, monuments and memorials located in parks, park boulevards and other public areas maintained by the Park and Recreation Department. The department also provides administrative support for the Public Art Advisory Board.

Dorothy Koelling (????-????)

This life-size bronze sculpture was was acquired in 1994 through efforts of the Public Art Advisory Board. This sculpture is located at A. Price Woodard Park.

Richard Bergen (????-????)
????, bronze

This life-size bronze sculpture was created by artist Richard Bergen and is located at Heritage Square Park.

Hike/Bicycle Paths

A ten-mile path runs along the Big Arkansas River extending from Galena Street on the south to 21st Street on the north, and accommodates many citizens who enjoy walking, bicycling and roller skating.

A 4 ½ mile bike/hike trail was constructed by the Department of Transportation in conjunction with the I-35 expressway. The trail runs from Stafford Street on the south to 17th Street on the north.

Hiker Monument
Allen George Newman (1875-1940)

This bronze sculpture was erected by the Spanish American War Veterans. The soldiers in this war were known as the "Hikers". This sculpture is located at Central Riverside Park at Nims and Murdock.

This bronze sculpture was dedicated to former Mayor A. Price Woodard, Jr. This sculpture is located at A. Price Woodard Park.

"Sculpture by Harry Bertoia. This work of art is dedicated to the memory of A. Price Woodard - Mayor of Wichita, Attorney, member of the Board of Education and humanitarian. A. Price Woodard was a friend of all and gave to his community a free and open spirit."

This bronze sculpture is located at the Bob Brown Expo Hall at Century II Convention Center.

"Donated to the City of Wichita by the Devore Foundation in commemoration of Music Theatre of Wichita's 25th anniversary. Dedicated June 12th, 1996. Dorothy Koelling, artist."

Joan of Arc Statue
? (????-????)
1996, bronze

In 1970, a stone statue of Joan of Arc was presented to the people of Wichita by the people of Orleans, France and was dedicated at a location near the Kansas Gas and Electric Company reflecting pool. It was removed from its original site in 1987 in response to concerns about its condition. A copy in reconstituted stone is currently in storage and is scheduled to be placed at City Hall.

In 1996, a bronze copy was cast in Rome and dedicated to a new site in front of the Wichita Public Library.

John S. Stevens Veterans Memorial

Dedicated in 1977, this memorial is named after the late City Commissioner John S. Stevens and was a joint project between the City, Urban Renewal Agency and several veterans groups. The memorial is located at Veterans Memorial Park.

Kansas Korean War Memorial

Currently under construction, this project is being sponsored by the Kansas Korean War Memorial Association. The memorial is located at Veterans Memorial Park.
