The reasons for having licenses are to increase safety through inspection, to protect your bike (your license number will help the police find your bike if it is lost or stolen, and it is an aid to the police for identification purposes in case of an accident), and to provide money for maintenance of bike routes, for establishment of new paths and for safety and educational materials.
Protect your bicycle by locking it every time you leave it unattended. Use a high-quality locking device and avoid devices which can be easily picked, broken or cut with wire cutters.
When you are not riding, keep your bicycle in a locked shed, garage or basement. Never leave your bicycle in a yard or driveway where it could be seen and stolen. If you have homeowners or apartment insurance, check to see if the policy covers bicycles. When your bicycle is licensed and inspected, keep your copy of the license application for reference in case your bicycle is lost or stolen.
Bicycle license's can be purchased from almost any of the major bicycle shops around Wichita. When you purchase a bike, they will offer to register the serial number and sell you a license. You should be able to register any bike and purchase the license from these shops. The department stores should also offer a license.
The fee for a license is $7.50. If you take your bike in at a later time, you will need a safety inspection at the time you register.
