Early one morning in July, Housing and Community Services Department program managers, Tom Byler, Tony Hardrick, Michael Hollimon, Gail Lotson, Marty Miller, Michelle Rucker, Mark Stanberry and Director, Mary K. Vaughn, donned jeans and t-shirts to plant flowers in northeast Wichita. The staff worked alongside participants in the New Communities Initiative (NCI) Summer Youth Employment "Facelift" program. During the summer program, the youth cleaned up alleys, driveways and sidewalks and painted house numbers on curbs. The summer program was funded by Sedgwick County Community Corrections and supervised by the Urban League of Kansas. City Departments of Housing and Community Services, Park and Recreation, Public Works and the Office of Central Inspection provided support. The flowers symbolized the hope that is returning to the area because of the New Communities Initiative.
