Benefits

Pay: Pay is competitive with comparable law enforcement/fire department agencies. 2007 pay range is $31,955.00 to 58,735.00 with an increase in pay of one pay range (to $34,150.00) after completing the Wichita Police Academy. Holiday pay, EMT incentive pay and longevity pay are also offered.

Sick Leave: Employees accumulated sick leave based upon years of service with no limit on maximum amount accumulated.

Paid Vacation: Commissioned personnel working a 24-hour shift earn vacation at a progressive rate with less than 5 years of service; an employee earns 10 days a year (a day is 12 hours, a shift is 24 hours.) Twenty-one years or more of service earns 25 days a year.
Due to the 56 hour workweek, personnel working 24 hour shifts will receive 4 “Kelly Days” (24 hour shifts off during the year scheduled at the departments convenience.

Holidays: Employees receive compensation for all recognized holidays. 24-hour personnel are not allowed the time off and will receive on day’s pay for the holiday.

Health, Major Medical, Dental and Life Insurance

  1. Employees are offered the medical plans available through the City of Wichita.
  2. Life insurance is offered to employees with the amount being based upon salary.
  3. Optional accidental death and dismemberment insurance is offered.
  4. Dental plans are available.
  5. Long-term disability is offered.

Other Benefits: Employees may choose to join the Credit Union, participate in a deferred compensation plan, and enjoy the convenience of direct deposit of paychecks in participating banks and savings institutions.

Retirement: Commissioned employees become members of Plan C-79 of the retirement system of the City of Wichita. Normal retirement is twenty years of actual service with attainment of 50 years of age or older, or completion of 30 years of actual service regardless of age based upon a percentage of final salary and years of service to a maximum of 75%. The employee contributes a percentage of salary to the plan fund. Commissioned personnel do not contribute to the Social Security System.
