Turkey Fryer Safety Information
Deep-fried turkey has been a pleasure of Southern back yard cooks for years. Thanks to celebrity chefs, the technique is catching on elsewhere. Turkey frying however can be potentially dangerous. Please note the following safety tips in order to reduce fire and burn dangers associated with turkey fryers.
-
Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the amount of oil to use. Do not overfill.
-
Only use the turkey fryer outdoors, away from any building or material that can catch fire.
-
Make sure there is at least 2 feet of distance between the propane tank and turkey fryer.
-
Keep children and pets away from the fryer when in use and several hours after cooking has been completed.
-
Never place a fryer on a wooden deck., in a garage or under a carport or breezeway.
-
Never leave a fryer unattended.
-
If any smoke is coming from the fryer, turn it off. This means the oil has overheated.
-
Cover bare skin and use pot holders.
-
Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dry before dunking into oil. Water will cause oil to splatter and spill.

Please remember, fires start when your attention stops.
Tree Safety - A holiday message from the Wichita Fire Department
It’s the Holiday season and time to buy just the right Christmas tree.
Look for one that’s fresh and green. The needles should bend and not snap between your fingers. At home find a cool spot for your tree away from heater vents and the fireplace.
One of the most important things to remember when decorating your Christmas tree is to use safe tree lights. Any string of lights with worn, frayed, broken cords or loose bulb connections should not be used.
Remember to always unplug Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to sleep.
A dry tree is a serious fire hazard so water yours often. After the holidays, safely dispose of the tree at a recycling center. Dried-out trees are very dangerous and should not be left in a garage or placed against the house.
When purchasing an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled as fire-retardant.
Candle Safety - A holiday message from the Wichita Fire Department
Candles are a traditional and beautiful part of the Holiday Season. Given the proper conditions, the open flame of a candle poses a risk of fire.
Use nonflammable candleholders and position candles a safe distance from your Christmas tree and other holiday decorations.
Children are always fascinated with candles and are drawn to them therefore place your candles safely out of children’s reach. Never leave a burning candle unattended!
