The first of January, 1977, marked the consolidation of the Fire Department dispatching office into a Central Communications Division, including Fire, Police, Sheriff's departments and EMS (Emergency Medical Services) (ambulance).

Equipment and personnel remained at No. 2 Station while new facilities were being equipped in the County Courthouse.

The Broadview Hotel was the scene of a smoky blaze in May that caused $50,000 loss and forced occupants from the building.

August was a costly month as several large loss fires occurred at the Atherton Transfer & Storage Warehouse, 812 West Harry ($458,000), Cycle Parts Distributors, Inc. ($150,000), Garage Sales of America, 2803 N. Broadway ($100,000).

On August 4, a thunderstorm swept through Wichita causing electrical outages, tree damage and fires.

At the height of the storm, 29 of the department's 31 engine companies were out on alarms. A short time later, another big fire occurred at the Kansas Lighting, Inc. Warehouse in the 2400 block of North Hillside with a loss exceeding $70,000.

Century II Convention Hall was used for Fire Prevention Week activities for the third year. Previously, the program had been held at Lawrence Stadium for many years. Approximately 1,500 boys and girls from the 5th grade Jr. Fire Department attended as representatives from their respective schools.

Statistics for 1977 revealed fewer fires than 1975, but the loss figures increased almost a half million dollars. Rescue calls numbered 4,895, while fire alarms accounted for 2,372 runs.
