January, 1972, marked the beginning of clearing of buildings to make room for the new City Administration Building. No. 1 Fire Station was among those scheduled to be raised. In February, the historic Stockyards Hotel and Restaurant was destroyed in a $75,000 fire.

A real highlight for the Wichita Fire Department occurred in April when Chief Carney and Captain Al Rose received the "National Award of Merit" from the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America, on behalf of the Wichita Fire Department's annual campaign. The Wichita Fire Department had adopted Muscular Dystrophy as its public service project in 1954. Through the efforts of firefighters and their families, $77,389 was raised in the telethon and canister program that year.

Wichita firefighters made the news when they rescued a five-year old girl who had fallen down a chimney.

The Junior Fire Department program was responsible for saving a life when a ten-year old boy noticed a fire and notified the Wichita Fire Department who rescued an occupant of the home involved.

In May, firefighters saved the lives of 3 citizens, a man at 2404 East 20th and 2 small boys at 351 All Hallows.

Pay hikes for Fire and Police personnel were approved by City Commissioner. A 7 1/2% increase was approved for Fire and Police while the rest of the City employees received a 3% raise.

The 3rd Annual Firefighters Appreciation Service, hosted by Fire Chaplain Greenlee, featured as guest speaker Dennis Smith of the New York Fire Department and author of the best seller "Report from Engine Company #82."

In August, the first Fire Science Class was initiated at Wichita State University to begin a basic fire science 24-hour course. These classes were taught by Dr. John Leslie, director of Industrial Engineering.

October saw more ambulance trouble. This time, an incident in which an argument flared between the firefighters and the ambulance crew over the treatment of a fire victim just rescued by the firefighters. Two sisters of the victim were able to escape from the fire as a result of an Exit Drill program, co-sponsored by the Girl Scouts and the Wichita Fire Department.

In November, ground was broken for the new No. 1 Station at Murdock and Main. The first shovelful of dirt was turned by Mrs. Marion McGaughey, widow of Fire Chief Tom McGaughey.

A $50,000 fire occurred at the Hickory House Restaurant.

City employees were allowed to live outside the City, providing it was within 20 miles of the City limits.

Fire destroyed the Art Roll Mfg. Plant with a $60,000 loss.

Former Chief of Operations Training for the Wichita Fire Department A.H. Bradshaw was named to head the newly formed 25-man Airport Fire-Security Force.
