August 1958 - IAFF Convention was held in Wichita.

Flood time 1957 saw 120 off-duty firefighters called back to duty along the Little Arkansas River when it appeared to be ready to overflow. Seven men who failed to return to duty were suspended for one shift.

Several large fires occurred during December and January. The Walkers Brothers fire at 123 N. Main $700,000 loss; Cardinal Home Furnishing, 4735 W. Douglas $275,000; Broadway Christian Church $300,000.

In an attempt to cut down on the rising number of residential fires, Home Fire Inspections were started in May of 1958. This program started with fourteen men and officers from four fire stations participating. Twenty years later some departments would just become aware of this type of program.
