Several large fires occurred during December and January. The Walkers Brothers fire at 123 N. Main $700,000 loss; Cardinal Home Furnishing, 4735 W. Douglas $275,000; Broadway Christian Church $300,000.
In an attempt to cut down on the rising number of residential fires, Home Fire Inspections were started in May of 1958. This program started with fourteen men and officers from four fire stations participating. Twenty years later some departments would just become aware of this type of program.
