| In February 22, 1954, saw the passing of a former Fire Chief Ira A. Martindale at age eighty-four. Firefighters were called to his residence on a reuscitator call, but he failed to respond.
In June, new No. 5 Station was opened (rebuilt at the same location) at 2nd and Hillside, with the crew working from Station No. 9 during construction.
City Manager E.N. Smith appointed, without City Commission approval, a safety director to coordinate activities of the Fire, Police and Building Departments.
As a gesture of personal and public appreciation, a covenant was made by Byrd-Snodgrass Funeral Home, Inc. with members of the Fire and Police Departments which entitled any member killed in the line of duty to a $1,000 funderal service.
In November of 1954, Chief Wood announced a new fire inspection policy for business buildings. This initiated company inspection, equipped with walkie talkies, a quick return to the equipment could be made without response time being slowed. This type of inspection gave firefighters an opportunity to become familiar with all features of the buildings in their districts and with this knowledge become more efficient, if and when a fire occurred.
