| The salary in 1951 for firefighters had risen to a new high of $275 (which was "F" step of the new ordinance).
A new Jeep and boat, an E&J resuscitator (which replaced the old pullmotor) were purchased and assigned to No. 1 Station as a rescue squad. The second $100,000 fire of the year destroyed a new Safeway Supermarket at 1808 S. Hillside.
In July, the "Old Man," former Fire Chief H.H. McCall, was treated to a party held by seven of his boys he had hired twenty-two years before. It was his last party. Chief McCall died in December at eighty-four years of age.
