Lagoons

Maintaining Your Lagoon

  • Maintain a three- to five-foot (3'-5') water depth in the lagoon. Be sure to keep the inlet pipe covered with water in freezing weather.

  • Maintain short-rooted, sod-forming perennial grass cover on dikes (such as Bermuda, fescue, or buffalo grass), and mow regularly.

  • Keep weeds and trees out of lagoon and off dikes. Control aquatic weeds.

  • Do not allow trees within fifty feet (50') of lagoon, and keep small bushes and shrubs trimmed to less than ten feet (10') tall.

  • Do not allow animals within the lagoon fence. This includes ducks, geese, goats, dogs, and other animals.

  • Maintain a four-foot (4') high, welded or woven wire fence, with openings no larger than four inches by six inches (4" x 6").

  • Keep the gate on the fence padlocked.

  • Do not alter established dike slopes.

  • Do not install a water well for any purpose within one hundred (100) feet of the lagoon.

  • Do not allow overflow or discharge from the lagoon.

  • Do not dispose of any waste other than residential sewage in the lagoon. This includes trash, salvage material, paint, oil, gasoline, pesticides, or other hazardous materials.

Contact the Water Quality Section, Environmental Services, at (316) 268-8351, if you have questions about your lagoon.
