Elevator Inspection
The purpose of the Elevator Inspection section of OCI is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use and installation of all elevators, accessibility lifts, dumbwaiters, escalators, moving walks and other related equipment, as affecting or relating to the design, construction, installation, operation, alteration and repair of the same.
This section provides a critical service for the consumer by checking elevator and related equipment installations for compliance with adopted safety rules.
The City of Wichita Electrical / Elevator code (Title 19) adopts, by reference, the American National Standard Institute ANSI/ASME A-17.1-2004 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators and the ANSI/ASME A18.1-2003 Safety Code for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts as a standard for the city.
| When are the inspections performed? |
All elevators, escalators, handicapped accessibility lifts, inclined stairway chairlifts, inclined and vertical platform lifts, private residence inclined stairway chairlifts and private residence inclined and vertical platform lifts and related equipment shall be subject to an acceptance test before they are released for operation.
All elevators, escalators, handicapped accessibility lifts, inclined stairway chairlifts, inclined and vertical platform lifts except private residence shall be subject to routine inspections not to exceed one year intervals in addition to one year and five year safety tests.
All work must be preformed by a City of Wichita licensed elevator contractor.
| When do I need a permit for elevator work? |
A permit is required to install any elevator, escalator, accessibility lift, dumbwaiter, moving walk or any other related equipment within any building or on any premises in the city. Please call the Elevator section of the Office of Central Inspection at (316) 268-4462 for more specific information. The Elevator Permit Application Form has been made available online.
The following alterations and/or repairs require permits and inspections from the Office of Central Inspection:

increase in rated load or speed;
-
increase or decrease in dead weight of car;
-
increase or decrease in travel;
-
change in type of operation or control;
-
replacement, change in size, length or number of suspension ropes, belts or chains;
-
replacement, change in size or length of safety or governor ropes;
-
replacement, change in size or type of guide rails;
-
replacement, change in type or addition of a car or counterweight safety;
-
change in power supply;
-
replacement of an existing machine by a new driving machine;
-
replacement of an existing governor by a new governor;
-
replacement of an existing controller by a new controller;
-
replacement of an existing driving machine brake by a new brake;
-
replacement of tanks or anticreep leveling device;
-
replacement of pump, motor or valves;
-
replacement of hoistway doors;
-
replacement of hoistway door re-opening devices;
-
addition of hoistway-door locking devices or car-door or gate electric contacts;
-
addition of hoistway access switches;
-
addition of top-of-car operating devices;
-
addition of top-of-car, hoistway-door and/or car-door or gate operating devices;
-
addition of rope equalizers;
-
addition of auxiliary rope-fastening devices;
-
addition of car-leveling or truck-zoning devices;
-
addition of roller guide shoes;
-
addition of automatic transfer device;
-
addition of fire service;
-
addition of ADA compliant devices;
-
replacement of hydraulic cylinder or plunger;
-
replacement, addition or removal of wall or floor covering;
-
replacement of car operation panel.
