Cemeteries

The City of Wichita, Department of Park and Recreation, currently maintains both Highland Cemetery and Jamesburg Park. We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions we have received from people. If you have a question that isn't answered below, please contact the Park Maintenance department at (316) 337-9225.

  1. Where are Highland and Jamesburg Cemeteries located?

Highland Cemetery is located on the northwest corner of 9th St. N. and Hillside. Jamesburg is located on north Tyler Rd., on the west side between 17th St. N. and Jamesburg St. Visit the Directions page for more information.

  2. How do I find a person's burial location at these cemeteries?

To see a listing of people buried at Highland Cemetery, visit Sedgwick County KSGenWeb Highland Cemetery web site.

To see a listing of people buried at Jamesburg Park Cemetery, visit Sedgwick County KSGenWeb Jamesburg Park Cemetery web site.

If the person you are looking for is not buried at either cemetery, please visit Sedgwick County KSGenWeb Sedgwick County, Kansas Cemeteries web site for a listing of all cemeteries located in Sedgwick County.

    Definitions:

"Section" means one of the eight divisions within Highland Cemetery.
"Lot" means a block or area within a section where there are usually 12 grave spaces at Highland or 6 spaces at Jamesburg.
"Space" means a plot or area within a lot that is used for one internment or burial.
"Owner" means the owner of the cemetery lots or spaces.

Lots or spaces in either cemetery shall be used for the burial of deceased humans only.

  3. If I own a space, how much does a burial cost?

The City only recovers cost from the contractor to open and close a grave space when a burial is needed. The current cost is shown below:

    TYPE

    MONDAY - FRIDAY

    SATURDAY

    Adult

    $315.00

    $390.00

    Infant

    250.00

    325.00

    Cremains

    90.00

    160.00

Generally this is included in the families' cost from the mortuary they have handling the funeral. An internment order from City Licensing is required to open and close a grave space - also handled by the mortuary.

  4. Are there any spaces available for purchase at either cemetery?

No, the records received by the companies who previously operated the cemeteries were not complete with ownership records. Because of this, the City will not sell any lots.

  5. What is the City's policy on placement of flowers?

The City will allow temporary flowers to be placed on the grave one week before Memorial Day. These must be removed within two weeks after Memorial Day or the City will remove and dispose of them. All permanent vases on graves or gravestone/monuments may remain year-round.

  6. Who do I call with maintenance concerns?
Call the Park Maintenance office at (316) 337-9225.
