1871 - Wichita's first mayor was elected.
1909 - the City's government became mayor-commission form of government.
1917 - Wichita modified the structure of its city government. All five commissioners were to be elected at large and to choose among one of them as mayor. The commission would be limited to a legislative role and the executive direction of the city administration to be handled by a full-time salaried city manager.
April 14, 1987 - The City Commission held their first meeting as the City Council.
April 1989 - the City elected the first at-large mayor who would serve four-year terms. All Council Members would be elected by pure district elections.
January 1991 - Charter Ordinance No. 130 was adopted which would limit the Council Member and Mayor terms to two.
