LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL

Work is in progress to build a memorial to the officers in Sedgwick County that have been killed in the line of duty.  The Law Enforcement Memorial Committee of Sedgwick County, INC, has been working on creating a memorial to these officers and has made considerable progress.  The memorial will be built on the southwest corner of Central and Main in front of the city building.  The design for the memorial was created by local artist Constance Ernatt.  It will be in the shape of a shield symbolizing the protection law enforcement officers provide.  Each fallen officer will have his name and badge number engraved in a granite panel.  The centerpiece will be a bronze statue of two lions representing courage, strength and integrity.  One lion watches over the fallen officers while the other guards the community.

All costs of the memorial are being paid through private donations to the Law Enforcement Memorial.  For more information click on the link to the left.

School Is Starting

The new school year is starting and drivers are reminded to watch for and obey the School Crossing signals. Kids crossing at these signals will assume that you are going to stop when the light turns red and will walk into the street. Also watch for school bus Stop signs and understand the laws associated with these signs.

Traffic patterns will also change and areas around schools may become congested at the beginning and end of the school day. Plan for these times and watch for crossing guard signs at crosswalks. Rainy weather also affects how well kids watch for vehicle traffic so be extra careful during these times.

A little planning and patience will assist in making this school year a safe one for the students in our schools.

Apartment Complexes

Currently there are two active Neighborhood Watch programs in place at apartment complexes on 27 Beat. We are working on implementing a third and addressing safety issues at a fourth. A major goal for 27 Beat is to get all apartment complexes communicating to address common problems and solutions. One problem has been people being served eviction notices at one complex, then moving to another just a few blocks away. This keeps some of the problems in the same area. Our goal is that by July at least four of the complexes will be communicating via e-mail to address this and meeting several times each year to talk about trends they are seeing. Once this is established we will try to expand it to all complexes on 27 Beat and 28 Beat.
