The Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that a letter received by KAKE-TV and turned over to the Wichita Police Department on Wednesday, May 5, is an authentic BTK communication.
"Earlier this month we received a letter that describes the Otero murders, and we have ascertained that it also is from BTK," said Lt. Ken Landwehr, Commander of the Homicide Section. "We truly feel that he is trying to communicate with us."
Lt. Landwehr said a number of suspicious letters from various sources have been turned over to the police; but these two letters, and the one received by the Wichita Eagle in March are the only three letters that have been confirmed as being from BTK.
Based on the information contained in the letter sent to KAKE, police are still asking for help from the public. Police want to talk to any citizen who recalls a man seeking access to their residence by presenting identification as an employee of a school or a utility company.
"We are specifically interested in talking to anyone who was approached at their residence between 1974 and 1986, by a man presenting himself as an employee of a school or a utility company," Lt. Landwehr said. "Obviously, we are not interested in legitimate encounters. We want to know about situations where a man attempted to get into your house under suspicious circumstances."
Since BTK resurfaced in Wichita in March, police have received more than 2200 tips and leads.
